Amenomiya Kofun Cluster

The Amenomiya Kofun (tumulus) Cluster consists of 36 tumuli built from the middle of the 4th century to the beginning of the 5th century, centered on the summit of Bijo Mountain (188 meters above sea level).
Tomb No. 1, located on the highest point, commonly known as “Raikagamine,” is the largest in the prefecture, with a 64-meter-long, backward-facing mound. The mound was built in two stages, and the slope is covered with thatched stones.
Tomb No. 2 is a 65-meter-long round mound with the same structure as Tomb No. 1, and is located northeast of Tomb No. 1.
The persons buried in these two burial mounds are assumed to have been powerful persons who had control over the entire Noto area, considering the size of the mounds and the contents of the burial accessories.
The Amenomiya Kofun Cluster is an indispensable cultural asset in the history of this area during the Kofun period, along with the Odanaka Oyashizuka and Kamezuka tumuli, which face each other across the Ochi rift valley.
In order to preserve and utilize the tombs for a long time, Nakanoto Town conducted a five-year excavation survey starting in 1992, and since 1994, under the “Special Project for Utilization of Historic Sites” by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the tombs have been restored to their original state.
