Tatsuruhama Sumiyoshi Taisha
The festival is held at Sumiyoshi Shrine, where floats called “Hamayama” parade through the town together with the mikoshi (portable shrine).
The festival is characterized by the detailed and gorgeous floats, and is said to have started as a celebration of the establishment of the shrine’s headquarters here on the orders of Nobunaga Oda, the famous Japanese warlord. The history of the festival spans over 400 years.
◆The flow of the festival
①Welcoming of the dedicatory offerings (the evening of the previous day)
People of each town council put on their heroic costumes and pull the floats lively through the town to the sound of drums and gongs, and to the accompaniment of “kiyari ondo” when the floats turn a corner.
②Hikiyama Operation (from the morning of the day of the festival)
The floats are pulled out with the sacred staff received the night before, and gather at Sumiyoshi Shrine.
③Procession of the portable shrine
④Hikiyama Unloading
After the portable shrine procession, six floats are pulled around the town and back to the shrine.
⑤Offering of offerings
After the floats are pulled around the town, the votive offering is returned to the shrine.
