National Designated Historic Site Nanao Castle Ruins
Nanao Castle was located in Nanao, Kashima County, Noto Province. It is the site of a mountain castle from the Muromachi Period to the Sengoku Period, and is designated as a national historic site. It was expanded by the Noto Hatakeyama clan, eventually forming a huge castle that stretched 2.5 kilometers from north to south and 1 kilometer from east to west.
Located on a 300-meter-high ridge at the northern end of the Ishidō Mountains overlooking Nanao Bay, the castle was a large-scale mountain castle with numerous forts on several small and large ridges that branched off from the ridge. The name “Nanao” is said to be derived from “seven ridges” (Matsuo, Takeo, Umeo, Kikuo, Kameo, Torao, and Tatsuo). Some documents also refer to the castle as “Matsuo Castle” or ” Matsuo Castle.
